1st Annual Mackinac Meltdown at Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

1st Annual Mackinac Meltdown at Old Mackinac Point LighthouseThe staff of the Mackinac State Historic Parks is excited to participate in the first ever Mackinac Meltdown event in Mackinaw City by offering admission to Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse on Saturday, April 1, and Sunday, April 2, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Outside of some occasional winter openings in the 1990s, this is the first time one of the Mackinac State Historic Park sites, which includes Fort Mackinac and the Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum on Mackinac Island, and Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City, will be opening for the season before May. The Mackinac Island State Park Commission was established in 1895, and grew to include Michilmackinac State Park, which includes Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, in 1909. Historic Mill Creek was added in 1984.

A point in the storm and a guiding beacon since 1889, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse helped passing ships navigates through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac. There’s just as much to see from the top of the tower as inside the buildings. Authentically restored quarters and exhibits, including the original lens, Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum, and an audiovisual program, Shipwrecks of the Straits, make this “Castle of the Straits” a true gem of the Great Lakes.

Tickets to the lighthouse will be available through partner businesses of the Mackinac Meltdown for $8.00 each. All tickets must be purchased in advance, and no tickets will be available at the lighthouse. Organizers of the Mackinac Meltdown have guaranteed a minimum of 50 paid admissions per day.
