The breakfast was very nice and all the staff were outstanding. We upgraded to a newly remodeled room and it was excellent except for a few things. The table in the room wobbled. The top was loose. The luggage rack was unuseable I tried to put my suitcase on it and it wanted to collapse sideways. Two bedside tables would have been nice, we had to bring in the little plastic one from the balcony. A dimmer on the bathroom light would have been nice. I brought a nightlight along and was glad I did. It's not very relaxing sitting in a hottub with a bright light on. These are small things but for the money they should not have been an issue. We enjoyed the breakfast and the accommodations were very clean and roomy. The pool and hot tub were one of the nicest in the places we have stayed in Michigan. Very close to ferry and shopping. The price was very good. The only complaint I have would be the attitude of the front desk clerk when we checked in. Because we were a little early, she tried to give us another "cleaned" room of equal quality, but at a $10. increase in price and was very upset when we didn't take it. We waited the extra hour to have our orginal reserved room. Overall a good trip. I would like to go back there in the summer to enjoy the beach. Rooms are clean and the one we had was quite roomy for us and our teenaged son. The beach area was clean with many chairs for sunbathing. Can't beat the location--like many on "hotel row," this one is a short walking distance from all the area shopping areas and a short drive to the bridge, museum, and park area surrounding it. Don't listen to staff regarding recommendations for the ferry ride to Mackinac Island. They are all the same and if you get the online coupons (which you can show on your phone and don't have to print), all services cost about the same. Simply use the ferry services next door or a block away and don't get stuck waiting to take the "free" bus/shuttle to Shepler's Ferry. The staff could not tell me why I should take that ferry over another, other than "great service," but then they admitted the service was the same--no different amenities. Ours was fine and also very much on schedule. What can you do for an 18-minute boat ride anyway? I could only wonder if the hotel got a kick-back from Shepler's Ferry... Food: the free buffet breakfast is awful but has hot food as well as continental style. There is a lot of food and people staying there seemed to LOVE it. They went back for platefuls of the stuff, so maybe take my review with a grain of salt. Instead, on day two, we went to a wonderful independent bakery off the main drag that had excellent homemade blueberry scones, pastries, and also breakfast sandwiches for those who want eggs. Plus, the coffee there is great--regular coffee as well as specialty coffee drinks. Additionally, it is a funky little store with interesting things to browse through or buy (you can get something other than Nascar Rubber Duck and they don't push fudge there. Perhaps they don't even sell it!). It's called the Mackinaw Bakery and Coffee House. So, the Hamilton Inn Select Beachfront Hotel is a great place to stay, good value, especially if you like free breakfast no matter how it tastes.These comments are from a verified stay
